At a recent public meeting in Limpopo, a chief inspector of  the Department of Labour said that of  333 workplaces inspected 40 were not compliant with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act.

He said that an increase in CCMSA cases are also of concern. 18 000 more employers appeared at the CCMA- 11% more than before

According to the 2016/17 CCMA annual report they handled 188 449 cases and 43 033 arbitrations –  11% more than a year before.

The  chairman of the CCMA assured parliament that they “expeditiously” deal with cases; an average of  133.5 cases per hour.

‘Expeditiously’ normally means the employer is persuaded to make a settlement payment of some kind.  Employers assisted by Cofesa’s team of labour law specialists follow fair and lawful labour practices and avoid the trip to the CCMA.
