More essential services gazetted to be precluded from strikes, possibly also old age homes and nursing homes.

An essential services declaration means a party to a dispute is precluded from participating in a strike or lock-out and must follow a specific conciliation-arbitration approach.

The following essential services proposals and designations have been gazetted:

  • Draft essential services designation of wholesale supply of cash (including receipt and transportation to and from SARB; secure distribution of bulk cash; and secure storage and processing of cash). Intention to make oral presentations must be given by 28 February 2018.
  • Draft notice for the variation of the essential services designation of generation, transmission and distribution of power. Intention to make oral presentations must be given by 28 February 2018.
  • Draft update to the air traffic essential services designation (to include related weather services), and to the blood transfusion essential services (to include transportation of blood). Intention to make oral presentations must be given by 28 February 2018.
  • Essential service designations updated to reflect services provided by registered old age homes, or by nursing homes registered as welfare organizations, under the Older Persons Act.
